Free-womanYesterday was a day of crappy stories. Maybe you’ve had a day like that before. It’s the kind of day when everywhere you go, someone tells you about another yucky thing that they’ve experienced. It’s not always experiences of violence, sometimes its experiences of feeling belittled, disregarded, or shamed.

#Liberaltips2avoidrape trended as a hashtag on Twitter this week. Wrapped up in this disgraceful social media disaster, I also followed commentary on the Tips to Avoid Rape posted by Colorado State University. We have a lot of unpacking to do here, so let’s get started.

Are you rising today? Are you joining the 1 Billion? Typically, Valentine’s Day festivities make me a little nauseous. I’m a big fan of V-day--don’t get me wrong!

This is nothing groundbreaking. I know that creepy “rape t-shirts” have been around forever. Unfortunately I got a stark reminder about it yesterday when a coworker forwarded an email with the Top 5 Rape Shirts post in tow. Stuff like this seriously creeps me out! Who buys these shirts?

Yelling-cadetA million years ago, when I was learning to teach swimming lessons for a summer job, my mentor instructor taught me the importance of giving critique sandwiches. Start with a positive, insert your critique and recommendations, end with a positive. Makes good sense, even now.

While I have mixed feelings about saying this, it’s been a big year for sexual violence in the media so far. Following a year of sexual abuse blowing sports culture out of the water, we’ve started off 2013 with protests over the Delhi Gang Rape and national outcry over the happenings in a football town in Ohio.

If you are the kind of person who lives under a pop culture rock, you may still be hearing about the movie Les Miserables from friends, family, coworkers, and commentators. This post IS NOT a spoiler, because I haven’t seen it yet.

At the risk of bursting your holiday bubble, I’m going to apply a feminist lens to some holiday favorites and pastimes for folks who celebrate the Christmas holiday. A few nights ago, I happened upon a Christmas special, where they showed the Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer Claymation.
