Beyond the Choir: Strategies for engaging and mentoring men in preventing men’s violence

This webinar will take up the question of how we can inspire larger circles of men to become involved in taking a stance against violence. The presenters will integrate recent research findings with theory and practical experience implementing men’s anti-violence programs to engage participants in dialog about strategies for reaching and engaging a broad spectrum of men.

Erin Casey is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Washington, Tacoma. She has over 10 years of practice experience in the fields of domestic and sexual violence in roles including advocacy, counseling and prevention education. Erin currently teaches courses on Social Work practice, intimate violence intervention and prevention, crime victims’ advocacy, and social work research. Her research addresses risk factors for violence perpetration, relationships between violence and sexual risk, and ecological approaches to violence prevention – including engaging men in primary prevention. Erin is a research collaborator with the Mobilizing Men for Violence Prevention Project – a collaboration between the Universities of Michigan, Minnesota and Washington.
Jonathan Grove is the Men Against Violence Program Coordinator at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma Washington. Involved in survivor support and engaging men in these efforts for nearly 9 years, he currently works to broaden involvement and bring ever more innovative programs to PLU’s campus. One of a limited number of men with experience working with male groups on related topics, Jonathan is invested in sharing his own knowledge and experience to increase the number and success of such groups and the larger movement.
