Description:

The 2011 national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign explores common, everyday behaviors and offers individuals viable, responsible ways to intervene. This primary prevention approach helps to create environments where people are safe in their relationships, families, neighborhoods, schools, work places and communities. This year’s SAAM brings together resources and information, thus offering everyone the opportunity to address behaviors before sexual violence occurs.

Description:

Sexual violence is a huge concern in our communities and in the lives of women and children in the City of Detroit. Survivors of sexual assault often live in silence and in our city. Many of families do not know where to turn for help or even know that help is available. To bring awareness to this issue and the organizations that are dedicated to serving the community the Wayne County Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner's (WC SAFE) Advocacy Program and YWCA/Interim House are planning a Take Back The Night Rally in the City of Detroit. WC SAFE is providing advocacy services to victims of The 400 Project. The 400 Project is a sample of the 12,000 evidence collection kits done on rape victims that were never processed and found in storage units in 2009. WC SAFE is providing advocacy services to these victims, but also to any sexual assault survivor in Wayne County. YWCA/ Interim House is the only domestic violence and sexual assault shelter in the city of Detroit and one of the largest in the State of Michigan.

Take Back The Night started in the United States in the 1970s and focused on the unsafe streets, cities and campuses. Today, events highlight the problem of violence against women as well as the broader issues of sexual violence. All events during the month of April strive to bring awareness to the problem of sexual violence and support those who have been victimized.  Wayne County SAFE and YWCA/Interim House are working to gather the support of our criminal justice systems and other community agencies. Two speakers for the evening will be Lori Robinson, Editor of B.L.A.C. Detroit Magazine and author of “I Will Survive: The African American Guide to Healing from Sexual Assault and Abuse”, and Stacy Y. Barker, a sexual assault survivor and the first women in Michigan to have a mandatory sentence vacated by a federal court. There will be spoken words by Kalimah Johnson a performance poet and activist for women and the LGBT community. The rally will be held on April 6, 2011 at 6:00pm-8:00pm in Cadillac Square.
