Strengthening Military-Civilian Community Partnerships to Respond to Sexual Assault is an interactive two-day training that will help participants establish partnerships with local military installations in order to effectively respond to the needs of sexual assault victims in the military. Throughout this training, participants will build knowledge about military systems, protocols, and culture to improve service provision to military sexual assault victims and to develop an appreciation of the perspectives of their future collaborative partners. It is through this developing sense of awareness that civilians will begin to understand who the military Service Member is, the culture they need to live and operate in, what motivates him/her, and what the military victim needs when working with community-based advocates. With the knowledge gained through this training process, in combination with their existing expertise in sexual assault, participants will be able to serve as knowledgeable resources to military installations throughout the United States.

This training is sponsored by Fenway Health and the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center with additional support from Brookline Psychological Services and features Howard Fradkin, Ph.D, LICDC The cost for registering for this training is $40. This includes coffee and pastries in the morning and lunch. Even advanced professionals are surprised to learn that 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual trauma. This training is designed to help mental-health professionals and providers in related fields gain a better understanding of the continuum of sexual trauma and of the impact of sexual abuse on men. The session will describe clinically effective techniques for recognizing and assessing for trauma, provide a conceptual framework for trauma treatment, and explain clinically appropriate responses and interventions. A networking luncheon will provide a forum for sharing local and national resources for male survivors and providers. Providers are encouraged to bring resource materials to share. Dr. Howard Fradkin has counseled over 1,000 male survivors in various contexts over the course of his 28-year career as a psychologist. He is the co-chairperson and co-founder of the Male Survivor Weekends of Recovery intensive weekend workshops for men at all stages of recovery from sexual trauma. Dr. Fradkin was recently invited to appear as an expert on Oprah’s ground-breaking shows featuring 200 male survivors, who gathered to offer hope and inspiration for millions of survivors worldwide.
