Description:

This JDI webinar on preventing sexual abuse in youth detention will cover the importance of partnerships between community advocates and corrections officials and the vital role of community advocates in serving incarcerated youth. Leaders from both of these fields will discuss trauma-informed responses to this abuse and new opportunities to provide services to this underserved group afforded by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. The speakers will also address related changes in juvenile correction's approach to sexual abuse and next steps for continuing this critically important cultural shift. The webinar will offer examples of successful community-corrections partnerships, and will feature a conversation between an advocate and corrections leader who are currently working together to end sexual violence against youth behind bars. These discussions will demonstrate how such collaborations can ensure that youth get the help they need, including confidential rape crisis services. This webinar is the second in a three-part series on sexual violence in youth detention.Who Should Attend:This webinar is aimed at advocates and service providers – rape crisis center staff, counselors, and administrators – though anyone who works in the victim services field is encouraged to attend. Corrections officials, law enforcement, and other professionals in related fields are also invited.“Connections” is the second in a three-part series of webinars on providing services to survivors of sexual abuse in juvenile detention. The series is part of JDI’s National Sexual Violence in Detention Education and Resource Project, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. JDI is an international health and human rights organization that seeks to eliminate sexual violence in all forms of detention.

Description:

Webinar Description: “Language can never be neutral; it creates versions of reality.”[1] Yet when we discuss sexual assault, we constantly use the language of consensual sex to describe assaultive acts. This language often implies consent and romance, rather than criminal acts. In addition, we describe violence against women in passive terms, which allows the perpetrators of this violence to remain invisible and unaccountable. We also use language that objectifies or blames sexual assault victims. This interactive webinar will explore the language of sexual assault: how we talk about and write about this crime. We will discuss specific examples of the language we use and explore how to discuss sexual assault in a way that more accurately depicts the crime.Audience: This session will provide useful information and strategies for a wide variety of professionals, including prosecutors and other lawyers, law enforcement, medical professionals, judges, victim advocates, journalists and communications professionals, and others who interact with and write about sexual assault victims. Closed Captioning; Please contact Eliana Theodorou at etheodorou@legalmomentum.org if you require closed captioning at least 72 hours prior to the webinar. Please put “closed captioning” in the subject line of your e-mail.
