ENOLA, Pa. ‑ This month marks the beginning of 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The loss of housing, employment and resources that accompany a natural disaster creates environments where criminal activity, such as sexual violence, increases. In 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) created The Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims. The Fund aids sexual assault victims and advocacy programs impacted by disasters across the United States.
To help aid future efforts, NSVRC is releasing Cards That Care. These note cards were created through an online design competition. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these cards will support The Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims.
The winning design that conveys The Relief Fund's message, "Lend a hand, heal a heart," was created by Alyssa Cramer from Indiana. Based on results from online voting, two other designs garnered honorable mentions and were created by Myra Marsh, of Pennsylvania, and
Susanna I. Mercado and Daniel Mercado, of Pennsylvania.
“It’s so inspiring to see people using their creativity to help victims in disaster areas,” says NSVRC Director Karen Baker. “This project helped bring awareness to sexual violence prevention, and was a fun way for people to get involved. Even if someone didn’t design a card, they were able to participate by voting for their favorite design. Now, everyone can enjoy these cards while supporting The Relief Fund and sending a card to someone they care about."
