Poetry Events Raise Awareness of Sexual Violence during April Campaign: It’s About Time to Prevent Sexual Violence.” ENOLA, PA – Each year during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) encourages advocates, educators, and others to organize activities to increase community awareness. This year’s nationwide campaign calls for sexual assault programs, campus groups and interested institutions and organizations to sponsor a SAAM Poetry Slam. “SAAM Poetry Slams allow individuals the opportunity to use their voice, creativity, and passion to raise awareness of sexual violence and encourage prevention, while promoting strength, healing and understanding among participants” explains Karen Baker, NSVRC Director. “This year’s campaign, It’s About Time to Prevent Sexual Violence, sends a clear message that sexual violence is preventable. Poetry slams encourage us to speak out and to listen - to each other and to this message,” continued Baker. Poetry slams have been scheduled, from Alaska to the Virgin Islands, and in an unprecedented fashion, among all correctional facilities in the state of Pennsylvania. Baker comments, “I hope more offices in state and local governments, and more communities will realize the impact they can have in all forms of violence prevention.”
The NSVRC website offers a calendar of SAAM events planned for April, including poetry slams. The website also offers information on SAAM award winners and campaign resources and products. The NSVRC is a national information and resource center relating to all aspects of sexual violence. It collects and disseminates a wide range of resources on sexual violence including statistics, research, position statements, statutes, training curricula, prevention initiatives and program information. The NSVRC assists coalitions, local programs, advocates and others working to end and prevent sexual violence. For additional information, visit www.nsrvc.org or call toll free 877-739-3895.
