This is the May 2003 newsletter Healing Hands, Vol. 7, No. 2, a publication of Health Care for the Homeless Clinician’s Network, National Health Care for the Homeless Council. This issue focuses on the impact that homelessness has on children, especially for those who have experienced sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse or are in environments where this abuse is occurring. The issue addresses the need for early intervention and provides clinicians with tips on identifying signs of trauma in homeless children as well as when and how to intervene.

This research report from the Western Criminology Review explores the use and effectiveness of sex offender registries. Data for this research was collected from a sample of registered sex offenders.

Sex Offender Registries as a Tool for Public Safety: Views from Registered Offenders

This research by Walter DeKeseredy and his colleagues in Ohio examines the incidents of and issues surrounding the sexual assault of women in rural areas during separation and/or divorce . The paper concludes by finding that many women were sexually assaulted at various points in the separation process: 53% being sexually assaulted when they wanted to leave, 32% while they were leaving, and 37% after they had left. A strength of this paper is that the women’s voices are included in extended quotes.
