Sexual violence -- including rape, child sexual abuse, and sexual harassment -- is a complicated topic to understand. There are many fears, myths and stereotypes that abound. We understand that reporting on these topics is a difficult task and we appreciate the media’s commitment to doing so with integrity. As a result, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) has created a packet for journalists about reporting on sexual violence.

As members of the media, journalists play a critical role in illuminating the truth for people. Well-written, fact-based stories that place a particular incident in a broader context can go a long way toward educating the public. A well-informed public can help ensure appropriate responses and services for victims; accountability and treatment for those who abuse others; and can strengthen the prevention strategies of organizations and communities. This fact sheet discusses some basic information on sexual violence.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics special report Rape and Sexual Assault Victimization Among College-Age Females, 1995–2013 released in December, 2014 uses the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) to compare the rape and sexual assault victimization from 1995 to 2013 of female college students (enrolled in a college, university, trade school or vocational school) and female nonstudents. This publication is designed to promote consistency in the use of terminology and data collection across organizations that work to prevent sexual violence. The updated document provides more detail on the various definitions of “sexual violence” and by addressing how technology is used to perpetrate unwanted sexual experiences. Learn more and download.

This flyer provides information about the NSVRC’s Lifespan Project which is a technical assistance initiative to provide advocates, medical providers, law enforcement, prosecutors, and others with resources and strategies to effectively respond to and support survivors of sexual violence. The Lifespan Project focuses on trauma-informed service delivery with a particular concern for populations who may fall through the cracks of our systems.

This report discusses the PREA Standards for a multidisciplinary response to sexual abuse in confinement. It includes assessment finding and barriers and strategies for creating a meaningful, compliant response. 


 

The Lesbian and Gay Foundation of the UK released a guide on sexual violence for women who identify as lesbian or bisexual. 

 

This report from the NCAA presents findings from an Executive Committee appointed to explore the issue of sexual assault and interpersonal violence on campus and how it relates to athletic programs. The report includes informatiton on compliance, collaboration, student perspectives, and education programs on this topic. 

 

This report was born out of the Student Summit on Sexual Assault that was facilitated by CALCASA in April 2014. Over 50 students participated, representing public and private universities and community colleges. It includes student recommendations on how colleges and universities can better respond to incidents of sexual assault and better support survivors with resources, information and transparency.

The 2010 SAAM Campaign addressed sexual assault prevention on college campuses. It includes resources for each of the six levels of the Spectrum of Prevention

This guide discusses the 2014 research article "A systematic review of primary prevention strategies for sexual violence perpetration" by Sarah DeGue et al. It summarizes the methods and discusses key findings of the systematic review. It also proposes ways preventionists can use this research to identify promising prevention strategies, strengthen and evaluate their current efforts, and advocate with funders, policymakers, researchers, and community partners.
