Sexual Violence prevention is not always an easy subject to talk about! When it comes to communicating our primary prevention messages to our community, we often wonder what would resonate the most with our audience.During this 1-hr webinar we will explore simple and creative ways of getting our prevention messages out to the community. Applying the techniques and strategies of advertising to sexual violence prevention, the speaker will guide us through the process of developing constituency–specific social media messaging, highlight some of the common pitfalls to avoid, and share tips on how to measure the impact of social media campaigns.Whether you are working on a flyer or poster-campaign for your neighborhood community,  or  creating social messaging campaign for youth on Facebook or Twitter, these simple, easy to follow steps will help you to craft effective primary prevention messages that would resonate with your targeted audience. Participants will  find out about : 

  • Tips and strategies on how to communicate the value of sexual violence prevention to the community
  • Messaging tactics designed to resonate with targeted audience
  • About successful primary prevention media campaigns
  • Simple ways of measuring the impact of their social media campaigns

 Presenter : Brad Perry, MS, MA worked at the Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance (VSDVAA) from 2000-2011 after starting the first male-focused sexual assault peer education group at James Madison University. In his role as statewide Statewide Prevention Coordinator for VSDVAA, he provided training and technical assistance to primary prevention initiatives throughout Virginia, consulted for the CDC, and edited the Moving Upstream newsletter. He currently sits on the national board of Hollaback!, and has authored articles published in Yes Means Yes, The Prevention Researcher, and Violence Against Women. Nancy Schwartzman is a filmmaker, writer, and activist, whose focus is on sex and communication. She is the director of the documentary THE LINE and the founder of the THE LINE Campaign, which empowers young people to re-envision their intimate relationships. She lectures worldwide on the topic of consent and boundaries.
 
Joseph Samalin is the Coordinator of Training & Technical Assistance at Men Can Stop Rape and has been actively working against gender-based violence for over 15 years. He has worked with Safe Horizon’s Anti-Stalking Program, teen dating violence awareness organization Day One, and the New York City Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence.
 
 
 
Kelly McBride, of the Poynter Institute, is a writer, teacher, and the leading voice in American journalism on how the media covers sexual assault. As a reporter, she covered issues ranging from white supremacy to the Catholic Church’s abuse scandal. Her expertise has been quoted by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and CNN, among others.
 
 
Andrea (AJ) Plaid is the Sexual Correspondent for the race-and-pop culture blog Racialicious. She is also co-edits blog's upcoming Love, Anonymously blog carnival, which will feature posts on and by people of color regarding love and sex.  Her discussions on race, gender, and sex have been featured in Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, andBitch as well as on GRITtv's "Chew on This" segment.  Her work has been republished, among other online sites, Penthouse, WireTap Magazine, New American Media, and RaceWire. She is currently working on a post for AlterNet about the economics of interracial porn. She owns her own safer-sex kit company called Freak Kits.

A one-day training conference for professionals who work with sexual assault and rape victims/survivors.

Join members of the Rensselaer County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and other professionals from healthcare, law enforcement, higher education, counseling/advocacy, and prosecution for a one-day conference on responding effectively to victims/survivors of sexual assault and rape.

All conference attendees will participate in aninteractive plenary session in which presenters will highlight the benefits of working as a multidisciplinary team to respond to sexual assault and rape. Attendees can then choose to attend more specific training sessions based on their discipline and
training needs.

Breakfast, lunch, and refreshments are included in the cost of the training, as well as all conference materials and parking in the lot on the rear side of the Alumni House or North Lot.
