Description:

As healthy sexuality gains momentum as an approach to sexual violence prevention, it can be easy for beginners to feel they are in uncharted territory. This workshop will focus on exploring the basics of the healthy sexuality framework and how it connects to and strengthens prevention efforts. No question or concern is off-limits as we create a space that is centered on increasing participant’s skills, comfort-level and fluency in discussing and defining healthy sexuality. Participants will learn strategies for including healthy sexuality in sexual violence prevention efforts. This workshop will be interactive in format, allowing for activities, discussion, and feedback regarding opportunities and barriers. Note: this is a repeat of the training with the same name in November 2012. It was so popular, we decided to offer it again!

A two-part training led by Viktoria Kristiansson of AEquitas: The Prosecutors' Resource on Violence Against Women.

  • Intimate Partner Sexual Assault

This presentation will examine the devastating dynamics of sexual assault by an intimate partner including the use of power and control in a battering relationship. It will provide an overview of intimate partner sexual assault, the impact on victims and the resulting behavior and the importance of a coordinated community response to this crime. Prosecutors and allied professionals will be better able to recognize and respond to common challenges in these cases including the reluctant victim, victim intimidation and manipulation and confronting the misperceptions of the judge or jury.

  • Overcoming the Consent Defense: Prosecuting the Non-stranger Rapist

This session will examine the dynamics of non-stranger sexual assault, identify the challenges in investigating and prosecuting these cases, and explore strategies for overcoming these challenges. The presenter will discuss the characteristics of the non-stranger rapist and how they challenge traditional perspectives of investigators, prosecutors, judges and juries. Additionally this presentation will address the unique vulnerability of victims in non-stranger rape situations. This presentation will highlight the importance of an offender-focused approach throughout the investigation and prosecution. Additional topics include common defense questions and rape myths that can be barriers to a successful prosecution.

Description:

Union County College is offering a free screening of this powerful documentary to our students as well as interested members of the community and professionals at local agencies. Nancy Schwartzman's courageous documentary shines a light on issues of consent and female sexuality in way that we don't usually see elsewhere. Rather than asking whether or not women can or should say yes to sex, it's more a matter of how often our "no" often goes unheard or unheeded and that the question "Is it okay if we do this?" is rarely asked to begin with.

See the movie and join the conversation. Reservations are not required and anyone can attend. The movie does include some mature content that may not be appropriate for young children. Additionally, the College does not provide child care services. Please plan accordingly.
