Description:

Men from all walks of life will walk in women’s high heeled shoes from the courthouse to Yoctangee Park Entrance to protest rape, sexual assault & gender violence. Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will support The Ross County Sexual Assault Response Team’s violence prevention efforts, and rape crisis services in Southeastern Ohio.

WHO:  Male community members and leaders will proclaim their solidarity with the rape prevention movement by marching in high heels, with women and children marching at their side. Educators, students, law enforcement officers, elected and appointed officials, and others are expected to participate.

WHEN: The march is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. with registration starting at 11:00am at the Ross County Courthouse Stairs. Men, women, and children are invited to participate and walk-on registrants are welcome. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes and participants are being asked to obtain $10.00 in sponsorship due April 5, 2010.

“One in three women have experienced gender violence in her lifetime. A woman is raped every 90 seconds in America,” Said Frank Baird, Founder of the March. “That means someone you know, someone you care about has been the victim of sexual violence. This violence does not just affect women. Men are hurt and angered when women they care about are raped. Men are hurt and angered when they try to develop relationships with women in an atmosphere of fear and mistrust and blame. And the same violence that targets women also targets men because rape isn’t about sex, it’s about power, control and violence.” Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” men will literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

Join us, as we raise awareness and support for a new law that would require monitoring devices in all school vehicles. Let’s work towards changing the laws to ensure the protection and safety of all children. If you can’t walk, bring your chair and a sign to the park.

Bernadine Wade’s seven year old, special needs daughter was sexually assaulted repeatedly as she rode the school van from her home in North Canton to school in Jackson Township. Although, the teenaged perpetrator who assaulted Ms. Wade’s daughter admitted to the crime, was found guilty, and served time in a juvenile facility, neither the Jackson School officials nor Jackson Schools Transportation Department officials will acknowledge that the incident even occurred. Why? Because legally, they don’t have to. According to Ohio law, school bus/van drivers are only responsible for transporting children to and from school. They are not responsible for what happens to the children while they are on the bus or van. Under this law, children are not protected against sexual abuse, assault, or any other violation while riding a school bus or van.
