Fantastic NSAC Resources!
Last week I promised a surprise blog that would introduce Professional Books, Inc., as well as highlight some of the materials that will be available to look at in the Wellness Room during NSAC. As I mentioned before, Professional Books, Inc. will be joining us at the conference. They are a bookstore specializing in all aspects of mental health and well-being. They also have the very latest books from every major psychotherapy publisher, including, Guilford, John Wiley, WW Norton, and Routledge. So, I encourage you to check them out if you have a chance. I would also encourage you to take a look at the following books from the NSVRC Library as you enjoy some peace in the Wellness Room.
The Journey of Healing: Wisdom from Survivors of Sexual Abuse, a Literary Anthology edited by Marjorie Ryerson is truly unique. The contents of the book showcase the work of sexual assault survivors. Entries came from men and women of diverse cultures and ages. It includes poems, essays, and stories. The stories included are fictional, as well as autobiographical. The pieces highlighted in the book show both the pain and hope that come from the healing and surviving of abuse. The anthology also showcases black and white photographs.
Another great resource that will be worth checking out is The Use of the Creative Therapies with Sexual Abuse Survivors edited by Stephanie L. Brooke. The method used in this book is a holistic one that utilizes various techniques for healing from the trauma of sexual abuse. It also presents several methods of communicating the unspeakable horrors of sexual abuse nonverbally. The book contains information that is relevant to treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. It also contains useful activities and illustrations.
One more resource worth taking a look at is Strong at the Broken Places: Overcoming the Trauma of Childhood Abuse by Linda T. Sanford. This is a compressive guide that offers hope and encouragement to every woman who was sexually abused as a child and for those who care about her. The author uses personal experience with professional knowledge to show how to come to terms with the past and be able to move on towards the future. The book contains clear explanations, practical suggestions, a map of the healing journey, and many first-person examples of the recovery process.
These are just a few of the NSVRC Library resources that will be available for you all to check out in the Wellness Room. Feel free to also check out the many other resources the library has to offer. I hope you all are getting super excited and I wish you all the very best of travels. NSAC 2014 here we come!
