World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2018

Today is recognized internationally as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and is an opportunity to highlight the vulnerability to sexual violence and other forms of abuse that so many elderly persons experience. Below is a statement from the National Center on Elder Abuse that communicates the importance of this day, and after that is a brief list of links to resources on Elder Abuse from the NSVRC and the Department of Justice.

Competencies Needed by Health Professionals for Addressing Exposure to Violence and Abuse In Patient Care

This publication is provided as a starting point for professional organizations and educational institutions to prepare their helping professionals, including doctors, dentists, nurses, veterinarians, and beyond, to develop the skills and competencies needed to meet the needs of individuals who may have experienced abuse and violence.

Preventing and Responding to Domestic & Sexual Violence in Later Life

This special collection brings together selected materials related to preventing and responding to elder abuse, specifically domestic and sexual violence. In doing so, it draws from the work of the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) and other organizations.

Nursing Response to Elder Mistreatment Curriculum

The goal of this course is to help nurses acquire essential knowledge and skills to appropriately respond to elder mistreatment. This course prepares nurses to integrate nursing and forensic sciences into the care of vulnerable older adults who have been mistreated or are at high risk for mistreatment by trusted others.

It includes 12 Modules with Instructor Materials, Participant Materials and PowerPoint presentations.  Additional resources and appendices are also available online.
