The #MeToo movement has been empowering to survivors of sexual violence. Tarana Burke founded #MeToo to "help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing.” As an advocate, I have seen few black women advocates and survivors, and encountered even fewer black men involved in the anti-sexual violence movement. So when I heard Charlamagne tha God from the radio show The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM explaining his

Check out NSVRC’s newest video podcast series “Resilience in Children.” In this two part video podcast series Casey Keene from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence talks about resilience in children after experiencing trauma. In these videos she explains that children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences can thrive. In part one Casey explains what resilience is and in part two, how to foster resilience in children.
This series is part of the Sexual Assault Across the Lifespan Project, where you can learn more about sexual violence against children.

I've always loved children’s books and now, as a mother of a toddler, I have become even more enthralled with them. At home we have books in every room, on the floor, on the furniture, and a few on shelves. It warms my heart that my little one loves books as much as I do. Today I wanted to share a few of the stories we have already enjoyed together and a few I will introduce to my kiddo later on. These stories, also held in the Respect Together Libraries, are perfect for parents or caregivers to share with their little ones to help introduce and recognize Black History Month.

I am a young, African American woman who has so much pride, dignity and joy in being black. Unfortunately, that pride and joy did not come easily. It was often blocked by insecurities which stemmed from what society thought black should be. As a child my father would declare, “Say it loud and say it proud. I’m black and I’m proud.” Although it would take several times for me to finally find the courage, I would recite it back to him shouting with confidence. Through the continuous teachings of my

This is a guest blog post by Sarah Harrison, Anti-Human Trafficking Specialist at the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
When you start searching the internet for information regarding human trafficking, it is likely that within a few clicks you will run across the term “modern day slavery.” This term has been used by everyone from local non-profits to law enforcement task forces to President Obama, and it has largely been accepted and solidified as a holistic descriptor of what human trafficking is.
However, it is important for us as a movement to take a moment to reflect

Once December rolls around each year, I dive headlong into listening to holiday music. Classic songs bring back warm holiday memories from years past, and I find myself singing along as I’m decorating, wrapping gifts, or driving to visit family and friends.
Every year, though, one song gives me pause – “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” There are countless different versions and covers of the song, but the gist is always the same: a duet where one person wants to leave a party, while the other spends the whole song convincing them to stay.
"The Answer is No"
This song can be uncomfortable for a

For survivors and/or those of us who are serving and supporting survivors, it’s that time of year when we may feel like we’re speeding up when we should be slowing it down. Community and social change work is hard, pressing, ongoing work; yet that doesn’t mean we can’t pause for a moment to give ourselves a little rest. But most of the time it seems we do not give ourselves the permission to do
