Misconceptions about sexual violence and inconsistencies about the way reports are classified reflect gaps in the definition and understanding of a false allegation. These misconceptions have direct, negative consequences and can contribute to why many victims don’t report sexual assaults. To improve the response to victims of sexual violence, law enforcement and service providers need a thorough understanding of sexual violence and consistency in their definitions, policies and procedures. This overview provides facts about sexual violence cases and reporting rates.

The 2012 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign encourages communities and individuals to join the conversation on how we connect and respect one another in order to prevent sexual violence. The 2012 SAAM campaign provides tools and resources that focus on promoting positive expressions of sexuality and healthy behaviors. Promoting healthy behaviors encourages sexual interactions and relationships that are consensual, respectful and informed.
